Alex Walsh of the United States Disqualified, Misses Bronze Medal, While Sister Wins Gold shortly after

In Nanterre, France, a remarkable turn of events unfolded for the Walsh siblings from Nashville, Tennessee at the Olympic Games. American swimmer Alex Walsh was initially disqualified and lost out on a bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter individual medley due to an error during her race. Shortly after, her younger sister Gretchen achieved gold and helped the U.S. team set a world record in the 4×100 mixed relay event.

Alex Walsh’s disqualification came after not completing the backstroke leg of her race on her back and turning prematurely, as determined by World Aquatics. Despite being in line for a bronze medal, her result was canceled, and she chose not to speak with reporters following the event. However, the Walsh family’s fortunes quickly changed when Gretchen, competing alongside Torri Huske, Nic Fink, and Ryan Murphy, secured gold and set a new world record in the 4×100 mixed relay.

The U.S. team finished in 3 minutes, 37.43 seconds, edging out China by .12 seconds. Despite a review of the results, the victory stood, leading to a jubilant celebration with Ryan Murphy visibly thrilled by the outcome. Prior to their success at the Olympics, the Walsh sisters had been integral in guiding the University of Virginia to four consecutive NCAA swimming and diving championships.

The achievements of the Walsh siblings at the Tokyo Games reflect both the highs and lows that can occur on the Olympic stage, showcasing their talent, resilience, and dedication to the sport of swimming.
