Bus crash in Guatemala.
A bus plunged off a highway bridge into a polluted ravine in Guatemala City on Monday, killing at least 30 people and leaving survivors trapped, according to the city’s fire department.
The vehicle was traveling on a busy route when it veered off Puente Belice, a highway bridge spanning a road and creek, plummeting approximately 20 meters (65 feet). Images shared by emergency responders showed the wreckage partially submerged in wastewater, with bodies scattered around the crash site.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has declared three days of national mourning and ordered the deployment of the army and disaster relief teams to assist in rescue efforts.
“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up to heartbreaking news. Their pain is my pain,” Arevalo said in a statement.
