Alec Baldwin’s plans following dismissal of manslaughter case

LOS ANGELES – A New Mexico judge made a sudden decision on Friday to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin relating to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer concluded the case based on the mishandling of evidence by law enforcement and prosecutors, ruling that the case cannot be brought back to court.

Baldwin, who was also a co-producer of the movie “Rust,” was involved in a tragic incident in October 2021 when a firearm he was handling discharged during a rehearsal, resulting in the death of Hutchins and injuries to director Joel Souza. Baldwin stated that he had not pulled the trigger but had pulled back the hammer.

While the criminal case has been dismissed, Baldwin and other producers are still facing civil lawsuits from Hutchins’ family members. White-collar defense attorney Mark Sedlander noted that civil suits are common in cases of workplace accidents like this.

The fate of the film “Rust” remains uncertain. The movie, featuring Baldwin as a western outlaw trying to free his grandson from prison after an accidental murder conviction, wrapped filming in 2023. The production team had aimed to complete the film to honor Hutchins’ vision and provide for her young son.

Despite the dismissal of the criminal case, Baldwin, known for his roles in “30 Rock” and as a frequent host on “Saturday Night Live,” faced potential prison time and career uncertainty. He and his wife announced plans in June to star in a reality series called “The Baldwins,” which is expected to premiere in 2025 and showcase their family life.
