AI’s Influence on the 2024 Presidential Race Differs from Experts’ Concerns

In anticipation of the 2024 election, concerns arose among experts about the potential misuse of generative artificial intelligence on social media platforms. However, rather than encountering hyper-realistic deepfakes, voters have been exposed to bizarre and comical AI-generated content. Examples include a video depicting former President Donald Trump riding a cat with an assault rifle and Vice President Kamala Harris dressed in communist attire, engaging in absurd scenarios.
Despite the outlandish nature of these AI-generated images, they have become tools for spreading false and politically charged messages, sometimes with racist undertones. Some of these images have been endorsed by political candidates and their supporters on social media platforms. The spread of such content has raised concerns about perpetuating harmful narratives and misinformation.
While both Republican and Democratic supporters have shared AI-generated images, it appears that Trump and his allies have utilized this technology more prominently. Some of these images aim to entertain or mock public figures, while others carry political messages. In contrast, Kamala Harris’ campaign has not heavily engaged with AI-generated content, focusing instead on traditional campaign strategies.
The accessibility and speed of generative AI tools have facilitated the rapid creation of politically charged content that can attract online engagement. This form of AI-generated imagery, with its hyperrealism, can amplify political messages and potentially mislead viewers. This has prompted discussions about the ethical implications of using AI for political propaganda and satire.
The utilization of AI in political contexts is not unique to the United States and has been observed in elections worldwide. While some AI-generated content may serve as harmless satire, there are concerns about the spread of deceptive or damaging information through these mediums. The influence of AI on political discourse continues to evolve, prompting debates about its impact on democracy and electoral processes.
