Veterans to receive Medallions as part of new state ill (North Dakota)
Veterans sacrifice a lot to serve our state and country. Some of them give their lives. These men and women earned remembrance for their bravery. Many lie in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan or the Fargo National Cemetery. However, many others rest in cemeteries across the state. These veterans deserve recognition, too.
The Senate passed a new bill that honors all veterans buried in various cemeteries. House Bill 1293 provides a medallion to place on their headstones. The medallion marks their service and sacrifice. Families of veterans who served in the national guard or reserves but aren’t buried in state cemeteries will receive the medallion as well. These veterans don’t qualify for other recognition from the state or federal Department of Veterans’ Affairs. This medallion ensures no one forgets them.
The medallions would carry the word “veteran” at the top. At the bottom, the branch of service would be listed. This simple but meaningful symbol would show respect for those who served in different branches of the military. It would also help families honor their loved ones who gave so much.
Senator Dick Dever, who represents Bismarck, is a strong supporter of the bill. He also serves as the commander of AmVets Post 9 in Bismarck. He is proud of the work the local honor guard does. Last year, they served at 177 funerals. “Our honor guard is always there for these important moments,”. “We never forget those who served.”
Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs gives a memorial coin to the families. This is a way to honor their service. The new medallion will go to families along with the coin.
The bill passed the Senate with unanimous support. The vote was 46-0. Now, the bill will go to Governor Armstrong’s desk. Once signed, it will become law. This step ensures all veterans receive honor for their service.
