When Elon Muskโs artificial intelligence company xAI arrived in Memphis, officials celebrated the creation of โColossus,โ the so-called most powerful AI training facility in the world. But instead of clean tech glory, the plant dumped a toxic problem into the communityโs backyard.
Boxtown, a nearby low-income Black neighborhood, says itโs paying the price. xAI quietly fired up 35 gas-powered turbines without air permits. Residents say their air has worsened, and their health is suffering.
Locals Say Muskโs Facility Pollutes Their Homes
Sarah Gladney, who lives three miles away and suffers from lung disease, told CNN she feels betrayed. โOur health was never considered,โ she said.
The turbines, normally used as temporary power, emit smog-forming nitrogen oxides and cancer-linked formaldehyde. Experts say the facility could be pumping out 2,000 tons of pollution every year, making it one of Shelby Countyโs worst polluters.
Yet no air permits have been issued. xAI claims a temporary-use exemption, but environmental watchdogs say the company is breaking the law.
Officials Say Musk Abused Loophole
State Rep. Justin Pearson, who represents the area, said he wasnโt even told about the turbines until they were already installed. โItโs an actual gas plant in the middle of a neighborhoodโand you donโt need any permitting?โ he asked. โSomething has failed drastically.โ
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) agrees. The group said XAIโs claim of exemption doesnโt hold up. โOur position is that they are operating illegally,โ said senior attorney Patrick Anderson.
Permits Filed Late, Community Left in the Dark
Months after operations began, xAI applied for just 15 of the 35 turbines. Twelve were removed in May, and the city claims the rest will follow. But activists remain skeptical.
The Shelby County Health Department says it is reviewing the permit application and will consider public feedback. Meanwhile, community anger grows.
Memphis has long battled pollution. In 2021, Boxtown residents stopped a crude oil pipeline. Last year, a sterilizing plant closed after locals exposed decades of toxic emissions.
More Expansion ComingโAnd Locals Arenโt Backing Down
Despite the backlash, xAI plans a second data center in Memphis, ten times larger than the first. But residents and advocates say the fight is far from over.
โThis isnโt about hating Musk,โ said KeShaun Pearson, director of Memphis Community Against Pollution. โThis is about our right to breathe clean air.โ
Musk has not commented. Mayor Paul Young, who welcomed the tech giant, insists the turbines will be upgraded and that tax revenue will benefit the community.
But to locals in southwest Memphis, that promise sounds familiarโand empty.
