Senator sips Margaritas with MS-13 suspect

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen’s trip to El Salvador just became the latest PR nightmare for his party. The Maryland senator visited Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man deported to the notorious CECOT prison despite a U.S. court order blocking his removal.

Kilmar Garcia scandal: The deportation that defied the court

Garcia illegally crossed into the U.S. in 2012. In 2019, a judge ruled he could not be deported without specific judicial approval. But in March, he boarded a plane filled with other suspected criminals bound for El Salvador. The White House later called it an “administrative error.”

Trump officials say Garcia is no victim

Despite the apology, Trump-aligned officials remain firm. They released documents suggesting Garcia is a known member of the violent MS-13 gang. They also revealed Garcia’s wife had previously contacted authorities after he allegedly beat her.

Van Hollen’s visit backfires fast

Van Hollen flew to El Salvador hoping to advocate for Garcia’s return. But things quickly went off the rails. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, a Trump ally, posted photos of Margarita glasses at the meeting, mocking the senator’s efforts.

“Kilmar Garcia, who just weeks ago was described as imprisoned in a torture camp, now enjoys Margaritas with U.S. senators,” Bukele sneered on social media.

Anger from families of victims

Patty Morin, the mother of murdered Maryland resident Rachel Morin, expressed outrage. Her daughter was brutally killed by an illegal Salvadoran immigrant. She said Van Hollen never reached out to her family, despite their tragedy.

“He didn’t call, didn’t show support,” Morin said. “But now he flies thousands of miles to meet with a criminal?”

Trump team pounces

The backlash was immediate. The New York Post ran a front-page headline questioning Van Hollen’s loyalties. Trump’s campaign seized the moment, branding the Democrats as the party that sides with criminals over American families.

“Chris Van Hollen just made clear where Democrats stand,” Trump’s spokesperson said. “They care more about MS-13 thugs than innocent Americans.”

Scandal fuels election fire

The Kilmar Garcia scandal isn’t going away. With crime and border security already top election issues, Democrats are scrambling to defend a trip that Republicans call a national disgrace. For Trump, it’s a ready-made campaign ad. For Van Hollen, it’s a political mess with no easy exit.
