Doctor Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder of Wife in Hawaii

Gerhardt Konig, a doctor from Hawaii, has been charged with attempting to kill his wife during a hike. He pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge in court. The incident took place last month in Honolulu, where Konig allegedly tried to push his wife off a cliff, inject her with a syringe, and strike her in the head with a rock. The wife’s petition for a temporary restraining order gave details of the terrifying event. She described how Konig’s behavior during their hike became violent, leaving her fearing for her life.

Violent Attack on the Trail

According to the wife’s account, they were hiking on a dangerous trail in Honolulu when the situation escalated. She said that Konig grabbed her by her arms and began pushing her toward the edge of a cliff. As they struggled, she screamed and begged him to stop. In the middle of the struggle, Konig allegedly took a syringe from his bag and attempted to inject her with something. The wife was unsure about the contents of the syringe, but given Konig’s position as an anesthesiologist, she feared it could be a lethal substance. After trying to inject her, Konig reportedly calmed down, only to grab a nearby rock and repeatedly bash her head with it. Two women on the trail witnessed the scene and immediately called 911. They helped the wife get away from Konig and safely down the trail. When the authorities arrived, Konig was arrested.

Konig’s Defense and Court Statements

Doctor’s defense attorney, Thomas Otake, spoke about the case following the plea. Otake argued that the not guilty plea was not a mere formality but a response to the serious allegations. He stated that there were two sides to the story, but only one side had been shared so far. Otake emphasized that the defense would present its side of the case when the time was right during the trial. He also pointed out that Konig had no prior criminal record, suggesting that there should be some consideration for bail. The court will continue to hear more as the legal process unfolds.

The Couple’s Troubled Relationship

The couple was visiting Oahu to celebrate doctor’s wife’s birthday while their two children stayed with a nanny back on Maui. The wife’s petition revealed that their relationship had been strained for some time. In December, Konig accused her of having an affair, which led them to seek therapy and counseling. However, the petition also claimed that Konig had sexually abused and assaulted his wife. The wife described the hike where the attack took place as dangerous. It had narrow sections and steep drops on both sides. She said she felt uneasy during the hike and asked Konig if they could turn back. Konig insisted they continue, and later, he returned to get her before the attack began.

If Konig is convicted, he faces the possibility of life in prison. Since the indictment on March 28, Konig has been held without bail. His attorney intends to file a motion for bail, arguing that Konig’s lack of a criminal history should be taken into account. Meanwhile, Maui Health, where Doctor Konig works as an anesthesiologist, has suspended him while they investigate the case. Although Konig works for an independent contractor contracted by Kaiser Permanente, the company has suspended his credentials as well. They have stated that they will continue to monitor the situation.

The investigation into the events of March 24 is ongoing. Konig will continue to face legal proceedings in court, and more details about the case are expected to come to light. The court has ordered a restraining order against Konig, prohibiting him from having any contact with his wife and their children. This legal order is meant to ensure the safety of the wife and children during the investigation. As the court process moves forward, the public will learn more about the full details of the case, and the truth will eventually come to light.
