OTTAWA, Ontario — In an exciting Professional Women’s Hockey League match, Boston’s captain, Hilary Knight, played a pivotal role in securing the Fleet’s 5-2 triumph over the Ottawa Charge on Saturday. Knight contributed significantly with a goal and two assists, showcasing her leadership on the ice.
The game began with Alina Muller giving the Fleet an initial lead in the first period, thanks to an assist from Knight. Midway through the third period, Knight further extended the advantage by scoring on a breakaway, and she later assisted Jill Saulnier on an empty-net goal. Additions to the scoreboard included a goal by Theresa Schafzahl, and Lexie Adzija, who also found the net with a second empty-netter.
In defense of the Fleet’s goal, Aerin Frankel was instrumental, blocking 26 attempts, which led to her 12th win of the season. For the Ottawa Charge, Tereza Vanisova and Natalie Snodgrass were the ones who found the back of the net. Meanwhile, Gwyneth Philips, stepping up in place of the injured Emerance Maschmeyer, managed 24 saves.
The Charge, despite missing their top netminder due to Maschmeyer’s placement on long-term injured reserve, displayed solid defense throughout the game. The Fleet’s victory allowed them to overtake Toronto in the standings, securing their position in third place.
A key moment came when Vanisova impressively split the defense, tying the game with mere seconds remaining in the second period. However, it was not enough to hold off the Fleet’s offense.
Looking ahead, the Fleet will face Montreal in their next home game on Tuesday night, while the Charge will prepare for an away match against New York on March 22.
