American forward Haji Wright showcased his striking prowess by netting a hat trick to spearhead Coventry’s victory over Sunderland in the League Championship on Saturday. Wright, who hails from Los Angeles, contributed significantly to the 3-0 victory.
The 26-year-old opened the scoreline in the 21st minute before doubling Coventry’s lead with a penalty in the 29th minute, following a foul by Sunderland’s Chris Mepham. Wright capped off his exceptional performance by adding a third goal to his tally in the 73rd minute, marking his 10th goal in 19 league appearances this season.
Wright’s return to form comes after recovering from an ankle injury that had kept him off the field since November 9. Although he made his comeback on March 1, his gradual return to full fitness meant he was not named in the squad for the upcoming U.S. CONCACAF Nations League matches.
Previously, Wright had scored for the U.S. in their second-round defeat to the Netherlands during the 2022 World Cup.
