Governor Phil Murphy visited the I-80 sinkhole site in Morris County. He announced that his administration asked for federal funding to fix the highway. The site was damaged by a collapsed mine under the highway near Exit 34. This caused a major sinkhole on the eastbound shoulder.

State efforts to fix the damage

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) crews are working non-stop to repair the damage. The Governor declared a State of Emergency in Morris County. This allows the state to apply for federal funding. The Federal Highway Administration can help if the road has serious damage.

Governor’s statement on the situation

Governor Murphy spoke about the challenges the sinkhole has caused. He said, “Residents of Wharton and commuters have faced delays for weeks. By declaring a State of Emergency, we can start accessing the funding needed for repairs. We are doing everything we can to help New Jersey families get back on track.”

NJDOT’s continued repair work

NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor thanked Governor Murphy and local officials for their support. “Safety is our top priority,” he said. “We continue to work around the clock to reopen the highway. We are making progress in the area that needs more extensive repairs.”

Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, the State Police Superintendent, talked about the challenges. “The closure of I-80 has affected motorists, local residents, and first responders. Public safety is our priority. We will continue to support the NJDOT as they make repairs.”

Congressman Tom Kean advocates for solutions

Congressman Tom Kean Jr. visited the site and saw the impact firsthand. “This is a serious issue. We need all levels of government to work together to fix it. Safety for residents is our priority. I will push for federal resources to restore I-80. I will also work on transportation alternatives for the meantime.”

Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco welcomed the Governor’s request for federal relief. He said, “This is an important step. We need the resources to restore normal traffic flow quickly and safely.”

Assemblyman Christian Barranco also supported the Governor. He said, “This sinkhole has impacted many people. I support the Governor’s decision to seek federal funding to speed up repairs.”

Assemblywoman Aura Dunn added, “Emergency funding is necessary to ensure safety and repair vital infrastructure.”

Local mayors express gratitude to Governor Murphy

Several local mayors praised the Governor’s actions. Wharton Mayor William Chegwidden and Council President Robert Norton said, “We appreciate all the hard work. It’s a big task, but we know it will be done right.”

Roxbury Mayor Shawn Potillo welcomed the State of Emergency. “The New Jersey State Police have been helping with traffic. We appreciate their support. The Economic Development Authority will also help local businesses.”

Mine Hill Mayor Sam Morris thanked the Governor for his support. “This is a serious problem. A permanent solution is needed. The federal government should get involved.”

Mount Arlington Mayor Michael Stanzilis praised the workers who have been fixing the road in all weather. He thanked the Governor for declaring a State of Emergency. “This is a vital step. We need a solution as soon as possible.”

Jefferson Township Mayor Eric Wilsusen said, “We appreciate the Governor’s visit. We hope a solution is near so the highway can reopen soon.”
