Experts warn these fakes are nearly impossible to detect. Some contain no active ingredients at all. Others have dangerous contaminants. Some are even repackaged insulin being sold as Ozempic.

Fake Weight Loss Drugs Are Being Sold Online With No Oversight

This isn’t just happening in dark alleys. Fake weight loss drugs are being sold online every day. Websites make bold claims, promising quick weight loss with no side effects. They sell so-called “compounded” versions of prescription weight loss drugs without any approval.

Bird says this is reckless. People are being forced to mix their own injections. Most don’t have the right tools or knowledge. Some aren’t even storing the drugs properly. That leads to contamination. One wrong dose can cause serious harm.

Fake Weight Loss Drugs Lead to Nationwide FDA Crackdown

This isn’t just an Iowa issue. States across the country are joining the fight. Iowa isn’t standing alone. The coalition includes 35 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They sent a letter to the FDA demanding immediate action.

The states demanding action include Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
