LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay recently dispelled any serious concerns that his collaboration with quarterback Matthew Stafford would reach its conclusion this month. Despite undergoing negotiations that attracted significant public interest, the Rams and Stafford reached an agreement to restructure Stafford’s contract, which includes a substantial raise for the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
McVay expressed relief on Monday, noting that he’s been “sleeping better the last couple of days” after the negotiations concluded positively. He emphasized that the idea of separating from Stafford never crossed his mind, even as Stafford’s agent explored potential trade value with other teams.
The Rams successfully reached an agreement with the 37-year-old Stafford, preserving their status as formidable contenders for the NFL Super Bowl in the 2025 season. With Stafford leading the team, the Rams have made three playoff appearances in his four-season tenure. Notably, the Rams mounted a strong challenge against the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles during their snowy divisional round matchup last postseason.
While the specifics of Stafford’s new salary remain undisclosed, McVay confirmed that the quarterback did not extend his contract beyond its original terms. The initial four-year extension, which Stafford accepted following the Rams’ Super Bowl win in February 2022, secures his position with the team through the 2026 season.
“There was always an understanding he wouldn’t play under the number slated for this year,” McVay shared. “Once he felt good about how the last season ended, and we were thrilled about his commitment to continue playing, it was a matter of sorting out the specifics. We had to balance his value with the strategic layout of our team, both short and long term. Thankfully, we all found a satisfactory resolution.”
In the prior year, Stafford had also renegotiated his contract for more guaranteed money. McVay found humor in the annual negotiations, pointing out how this offseason’s talks shortened considerably compared to last year’s lengthy seven-month discussions.
Stafford delivered impressive performance last season, achieving 3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a completion rate of 65.8%. His continued presence offers stability and leadership to McVay’s offensive strategies, especially with the Rams securing left tackle Alaric Jackson on a three-year, $57 million contract last week. This move prevented Jackson from entering free agency.
The Rams also aim to bring back Jimmy Garoppolo as Stafford’s backup, although they understand he might seek opportunities for more playing time. McVay didn’t rule out the possibility of keeping Super Bowl 56 MVP receiver Cooper Kupp, though he indicated that Kupp’s departure seems likely. The Rams haven’t engaged in talks to restructure Kupp’s current deal.
Kupp, having announced the Rams’ intention to trade him rather than maintain his significant salary for 2025, shares an extensive eight-year history with McVay. Although this potential parting aligns with strategic financial benefits, McVay praised Kupp’s enduring legacy with the team.
“His legacy as one of the all-time Rams is secure. Most importantly, I’m grateful for the eight years shared with him,” McVay concluded.
