In a heart-wrenching verdict delivered in Joliet, Illinois, a jury found a local landlord guilty of murder and hate crime charges for the heinous killing of a 6-year-old boy. The young victim’s mother had rented space in the convicted man’s home, and the attack reignited fears surrounding anti-Muslim sentiments during the early days of the Gaza conflict.
Joseph Czuba, aged 73, faced charges in connection to the brutal stabbing of young Wadee Alfayoumi, as well as the wounding of the child’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, on October 14, 2023. The incident occurred in the town of Plainfield, situated around 40 miles from Chicago. Authorities argued that the family was specifically targeted due to their Islamic faith, amid rising tensions following the eruption of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The jury, after less than 90 minutes of deliberation, returned with their decisive verdict. Wadee’s father, Odai Alfayoumi, expressed mixed emotions at a subsequent press conference. He spoke in Arabic, noting that while others encouraged him to smile, his grief as a father losing a child overshadowed any relief the conviction might bring.
National civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Shaheen, released a statement acknowledging the verdict as a moment of justice. He lamented the senseless act of violence that took the life of Wadee, underscoring the need to continue fighting against the hate that provoked such a tragedy. Crump urged the public to honor Wadee’s memory by working towards a safer, more inclusive future for all children.
Shaheen, deeply affected by the ordeal, chose not to address the media post-verdict. Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), spoke on her behalf, emphasizing her call for peace and love amidst the turmoil.
The trial’s proceedings included harrowing testimonies from law enforcement, medical personnel, Czuba’s former spouse, and Shaheen, who provided a chilling account of the day Czuba ruthlessly attacked her and her son. Prosecutors detailed how the young boy suffered 26 stab wounds, with the murder weapon still embedded in him when discovered.
A focal point of the prosecution’s case involved graphic evidence, including photographs of the crime scene and video footage presented in court, albeit obscured from public view to protect the victim’s family.
During the trial, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Fitzgerald highlighted the defendant’s cruelty in leaving the weapon in the child’s body. Czuba’s legal defense, led by attorney George Lenard, refrained from comments but had previously maintained a plea of not guilty against multiple charges including murder and attempted murder.
Czuba’s sentencing is scheduled for May 2, according to court records. Despite defense claims that evidence linking him to the crime was incomplete, the prosecution’s testimony—including Shaheen’s vivid descriptions of Czuba’s violence and hate-filled motivations—proved compelling.
Shaheen shared how life had been uneventful during their two-year tenancy with the Czubas until the war in Gaza began. Tensions rose as Czuba declared Muslims unwelcome, culminating in his racially charged attack against her and her son. Despite suffering numerous stab wounds herself, Shaheen survived, though her son tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement accounts confirmed finding Czuba outside the residence, bloodstained, after the attack. In parallel to the criminal proceedings, civil suits have been filed, including one by Alfayoumi, the boy’s father.
This distressing case has resonated globally, particularly within Chicago’s sizable Palestinian community. It prompted the U.S. Department of Justice to undertake a federal hate crimes investigation.
