Travis Kelce set to continue career beyond this season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce has announced his intention to play in the upcoming NFL season, dispelling any retirement speculation. At 35 years old, Kelce had been contemplating returning for a 13th season. Ultimately, he confirmed his plans in a message sent to Pat McAfee, which was read aloud during “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday.

Kelce expressed his determination, saying, “My dawg!!! I’m coming back for sure.” He emphasized his commitment to getting in peak condition during the offseason and expressed a strong desire to improve upon last season’s outcome. He reflected on the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, which thwarted their attempt to achieve a third consecutive Super Bowl victory. Kelce noted, “Got a real bad taste in my mouth about how I played in that last game and how I got the guys ready for battle. I can’t go out like that!!!!”

Throughout the Super Bowl lead-up, Kelce repeatedly voiced his passion for football. However, he had previously mentioned on his podcast that he needed some time to decide whether to hang up his cleats or continue playing. Kelce’s decision to return isn’t entirely unexpected, given that Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach indicated earlier this week at the NFL combine that Kelce was enthusiastic about continuing his career.

Kelce’s contract also plays a role in his decision. It includes an $11.5 million roster bonus due on March 15. Veach affirmed the team is proceeding with its offseason strategy as if Kelce will be part of the roster.
