C.A.R. Attack: 9 Dead, Hundreds of Homes Destroyed

In the northern region of the Central African Republic, a violent incident led to the deaths of nine people and the destruction of over 700 homes on Tuesday, according to local authorities.

The attack was claimed by fighters from the 3R group, a militia that emerged during the civil war claiming to be defending marginalized herding communities. 3R member Habib Yacoub explained that the assault on the village of Nzoroh was provoked by a dispute involving the theft of oxen.

Despite this explanation, Nzoroh’s mayor, Bertrand Oudin Dimanche, expressed uncertainty over the true reason behind the attack. Speaking over the phone, Dimanche condemned the actions of the 3R rebels, stating that they “have no respect for human life,” and accusing them of killing for political motives. He also criticized the government for its perceived inactivity and inability to provide protection.

The central government has expressed deep concern over the incidents and has pledged to issue a formal response. The exact number of people wounded during the attack has not yet been disclosed. The morning raid threw the local community into turmoil, with many residents fleeing to nearby villages, while others sought refuge in larger towns for safety, reported Jean Robert Ngbadin, a local Red Cross volunteer in the area near the borders of Cameroon and Chad.

Pierrette Benguere, the regional prefect, confirmed the casualty numbers and expressed hope for a government intervention to expel the rebels and address the worsening humanitarian crisis. The Central African Republic has struggled with conflict since 2013, after predominantly Muslim rebels seized government power, overthrowing then-President François Bozizé. A peace deal in 2019 managed to reduce the intensity of the conflict somewhat, but was undermined when six of the 14 signing armed groups later abandoned it.

The Coalition of Patriots for Change, comprising the 3R group, was formed in 2020 following the peace agreement. Despite the country’s substantial natural resources, including gold and diamonds, it remains one of the world’s poorest nations, with rebel activities thwarting mining operations and exploration by international companies.

Russia-backed Wagner mercenaries have been operating in the country, promising to combat rebel factions and restore peace. However, these forces have faced allegations of human rights abuses and allegations of supporting the military government of President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who has held office since 2016.
