NEW YORK — In a bid to reinforce their roster amid an injury-laden start to spring training, the New York Mets secured outfielder Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash on Monday night.

Canario, approaching his 25th birthday in May, first appeared on the major league scene with the Cubs in September 2023. Over two seasons, he has accumulated a batting average of .286, hitting two home runs and driving in eight runs in a span of just 21 games. His performance so far boasts an .857 OPS.

The Cubs had designated the righty Canario for assignment last Thursday, which followed their acquisition of experienced infielder Justin Turner. Canario had initially joined the Cubs in July 2021 through a trade that saw the celebrated Kris Bryant move to San Francisco.

In a coordinated roster decision, the Mets transferred infielder Nick Madrigal to the 60-day injured list. This move comes after Madrigal, aged 27, sustained a broken left shoulder during a spring training matchup on Sunday. Prior to his injury, Madrigal was contending for a spot on the bench with the team.

With these adjustments, the Mets hope to bolster their lineup while dealing with the early challenges of spring training injuries. The addition of Canario to their roster adds a promising yet developing talent to the outfield pool.
