NEW YORK — The New York Mets, seeking to bolster their roster after an early wave of injuries during spring training, acquired outfielder Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations on Monday night.
Canario, set to celebrate his 25th birthday in May, made his major league debut with the Cubs in September of the previous year. Over the course of the past two seasons, he has performed notably, hitting 12 for 42 (.286) and posting two home runs, eight RBIs, and an .857 OPS across 21 Major League games.
The young right-handed batter was made available when the Cubs assigned him for potential trade last Thursday, a move that followed Chicago’s signing of seasoned infielder Justin Turner. Canario originally joined the Cubs as a result of the July 2021 deal, which saw Kris Bryant, a four-time All-Star, head to the San Francisco Giants.
In coordination with the acquisition of Canario, the Mets have sidelined infielder Nick Madrigal, placing him on the 60-day injured list due to a broken left shoulder. The 27-year-old Madrigal suffered the injury during a spring training match on Sunday while competing for a position on the team’s bench.
