ROME — On the morning of the 10th day of his hospital stay, Pope Francis was reported to be resting after a tranquil night, according to a statement from the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff is being treated for a severe lung infection, which has led to the early signs of kidney failure. The brief update did not confirm whether the pope had awakened during the night but mentioned that he had a good rest and was currently in a state of recovery.

Just before this update, medical professionals indicated that blood tests had detected signs of early kidney failure, though it was said to be manageable. While his overall condition remains critical, it was noted he had not faced any additional respiratory issues since Saturday. Currently, Pope Francis is receiving significant oxygen support, and on Sunday, he was described as alert and responsive while even participating in Mass, though his prognosis remains uncertain.

Given the pope’s advanced age, health vulnerabilities, and history of lung issues, physicians have classified his situation as delicate. They have specifically highlighted the risk of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia, as a primary concern for his health. Up until now, the Vatican has not indicated any signs of sepsis in their medical bulletins, including the one published on Sunday.

Today marks the pope’s 10th day of hospitalization, matching the record for the longest stay during his papacy. In 2021, he was also hospitalized for 10 days at Gemelli Hospital in Rome following surgery to remove a portion of his colon.
