CARSON, Calif. — In an impressive debut for San Diego FC in Major League Soccer, forward Anders Dreyer struck twice, leading his team to a 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy, who are the reigning MLS Cup champions, on Sunday.

Dreyer’s first goal came in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Galaxy defender Emiro Garces lost his footing after receiving a pass from goalkeeper Novak Micovic inside the area. Taking advantage of the misplay, Lozano recovered the ball and quickly delivered it to Dreyer, whose left-footed shot found the back of the net past Micovic.

The match concluded with a second goal from Dreyer during a breakaway in the 92nd minute, ensuring San Diego’s solid performance.

Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos played a crucial role, making three saves and earning a clean sheet for the team. This victory took San Diego to be the 10th franchise introduced to MLS since 2017 and the third to win its inaugural match, following Los Angeles FC in 2018 and St. Louis City in 2023.

On the other side, Miguel Berry had the best opportunity for the Galaxy with a close-range shot in the 79th minute, which dos Santos expertly blocked.

This match marked the Galaxy’s first defeat at Dignity Health Park since their last match of the 2023 season. They were without key players on Sunday, including forward Joseph Paintsil due to a quad injury, and midfielder Riqui Puig, who is sidelined with a knee issue and is anticipated to return in early summer.

Micovic also made four saves for the Galaxy, but it was not enough to prevent the loss. San Diego FC is set to host their first home game against St. Louis on Saturday. MLS Commissioner Don Garber noted the strong support from San Diego fans, who filled four sections of the upper deck despite the distance.

“Many efforts to bring San Diego into the league have been long-term goals,” Garber expressed before the match. “Our league must always keep in mind that we are still growing, and it’s preferable to take the necessary time to develop rather than rushing. When the moment arrives, we want to ensure everything is functioning perfectly.”
