FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons announced on Saturday that they have interviewed Matt Eberflus, the former head coach of the Chicago Bears, as part of their ongoing quest to find a new defensive coordinator.
After a disappointing season with a 4-8 record, the Bears decided to part ways with Eberflus on November 29. Following his departure, the team appointed Thomas Brown as interim head coach, and ended the season with a 5-12 record.
Eberflus compiled a record of 14-32 during his tenure of just over two seasons with the Bears. Prior to this role, he was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts for four seasons from 2018 to 2021, and he spent seven seasons as a defensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys.
On Friday, the Falcons also revealed interviews with several candidates, including former San Francisco defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and Grady Brown, who serves as the secondary coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Earlier in the week, the Falcons had conversations with Derrick Ansley, the passing game coordinator for Green Bay, and Lou Anarumo, a former assistant with Cincinnati, who were both interviewed on Thursday. Moreover, Jeff Ulbrich, the interim coach and defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, was interviewed on Wednesday, while Wink Martindale, the defensive coordinator at Michigan, spoke with the team on Tuesday.
The Falcons made significant changes to their coaching staff by terminating defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers on January 11, after finishing the season with an 8-9 record.
