CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — On Friday, Lindsey Vonn opted for a more measured approach during downhill training, following her recent crash as she makes her World Cup return at the age of 40.
Vonn finished over three seconds behind the frontrunner, Sofia Goggia from Italy, on the challenging Olympia delle Tofane course. During her training run, she nearly lost her balance while landing a jump but managed to regain control swiftly.
After her fall on Thursday, Vonn reported only minor injuries, describing a sore backside and a broken boot as her main concerns.
“I don’t believe that my crash will affect my expectations for the upcoming events,” Vonn stated on Friday. “I hope to put everything together in tomorrow’s race, but since this is only my fourth competition back, I’m not setting high expectations for myself. My focus is simply on skiing well and enjoying my time in Cortina once again.”
Having made her comeback last month after nearly six years away from the sport, Vonn has seen a progression in her rankings, recently placing 14th, 6th, and 4th in her initial races. This weekend, she is set to compete in a downhill event on Saturday, followed by a super-G race on Sunday.
Vonn acknowledged that she still has several aspects to tune up, stating, “There are plenty of things I still need to sort out, and I’m not completely there yet with my equipment or my skiing technique.” She holds the record for the most victories in Cortina, with an impressive tally of 12 wins.
In a conversation on Thursday, Vonn expressed her hopes to conclude her skiing journey “once and for all” during the upcoming Olympics, where the women’s skiing events will be held in Cortina.
