HONOLULU — Enthusiastic visitors are making their way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to witness the spectacular sight of erupting lava.
The eruption, which initially began on December 23 in the summit crater of the Kilauea volcano, has experienced intermittent pauses. However, it resumed early Wednesday morning as a “small sluggish lava flow” and quickly transitioned into a striking fountain that reached approximately 200 feet (60 meters) in height, according to reports from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
By Wednesday afternoon, park-goers on the Big Island had the opportunity to observe two vibrant lava fountains from a designated overlook.
The observatory suggested that fountain heights might further increase as the eruption continues due to the release of gas-rich lava.
“The park is currently bustling with visitors excited to witness the eruption, and we anticipate a surge in attendance as news spreads,” stated Jessica Ferracane, a spokesperson for the park, in a recent email.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is notable for housing the summits of two of the globe’s most active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa.
The ongoing eruption can be viewed from several public overlooks throughout the park, with the lava flow posing no imminent threat to surrounding homes or infrastructure.
