Jets conduct interview with Broncos’ defensive coordinator Vance Joseph for head coach position

The New York Jets conducted an interview on Wednesday with Vance Joseph, the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, as they seek to fill their head coach vacancy.
Joseph, who previously served as the head coach of the Broncos from 2016 to 2018, becomes the 10th identified candidate to discuss the position with the Jets.
Other candidates interviewed include Aaron Glenn, Mike Locksley, Matt Nagy, Ron Rivera, Darren Rizzi, Rex Ryan, Steve Spagnuolo, Jeff Ulbrich, and Mike Vrabel, who has recently accepted the head coach role with the New England Patriots.

In addition to looking for a new head coach, the Jets are also deeply engaged in the search for a general manager. So far, they have met with 15 candidates, which includes Jon-Eric Sullivan, an executive from the Green Bay Packers, and Brian Gaine, the assistant general manager of the Miami Dolphins, who were both interviewed on Tuesday.

At 52 years old, Joseph has filled the role of defensive coordinator for the Broncos for the last two seasons under head coach Sean Payton. This past season, his defense led the NFL in sacks and maintained a strong position, ranking third in points allowed, which contributed to the Broncos making the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

Notably, Joseph played as a defensive back for the Jets back in 1995, marking his initial connection to the organization. His coaching journey began in 1999 as an assistant at the University of Colorado, his alma mater, before he transitioned to Bowling Green in 2004. Joseph got his first break in the NFL in 2005 as an assistant defensive backs coach with the San Francisco 49ers and later went on to have coaching positions with the Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals, culminating in his role as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2016.

After just one season with the Dolphins, Joseph transitioned to head coach of the Broncos, where he recorded an 11-21 record over two seasons. In 2019, he became the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals and held that position for four seasons before rejoining the Broncos to oversee their defense once again.
