OTTAWA, Ontario — In an exciting matchup at the World Junior Hockey Championship, Tuomas Uronen secured a thrilling 4-3 win for Finland against the reigning champions, the United States, with a goal just 1:46 into overtime on Sunday.
Uronen made a dynamic play, racing down the right flank during a fast break and skillfully beating American goalie Trey Augustine with a strike to the glove side.
This defeat marked the first loss for the United States in their three-game run. The team is scheduled to complete their Group A games on Tuesday evening against Canada, while Finland aims to extend their current winning streak to three after previously losing to Canada.
In a later game held at the Canadian Tire Centre, Canada bounced back from an earlier overtime setback against Latvia, shutting out Germany with a decisive 3-0 victory.
Key contributions from Finland included goals by Jesse Kiiskinen, Julius Miettinen, and Arttu Alasiurua, while goaltender Petteri Rimpinen excelled with an impressive 41 saves throughout the contest.
For the United States, the goal scorers were Carey Terrance from the Erie Otters, Cole Hutson from Boston University, and Brody Ziemer from Minnesota. Augustine recorded 29 saves for the Americans.
In Canada’s match, Oliver Bonk ignited the scoreboard halfway through the first period, followed by Caden Price extending the lead to 2-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the game, and Mathieu Cataford sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
Meanwhile, in Group B action at TD Place, both Sweden and Czechia improved their records to 3-0, setting the stage for a highly anticipated face-off on Tuesday night in the round-robin finale.
Tom Willander shined for Sweden, contributing two goals and an assist in their 7-5 victory over Switzerland, while Eduard Sale netted two goals to lead Czechia to a 4-2 triumph over Slovakia.
