TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers demonstrated they are eager to secure a playoff spot, showcasing determination and effort in their 48-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers. With this win, the Bucs not only triumphantly handled the game but also reinforced their chances for postseason play, thanks to a 359-yard, five-touchdown performance from quarterback Baker Mayfield. The team’s execution on offense, strengthened defense, and standout special teams contributed significantly to this commanding win.
Just under eight hours after the game, Tampa Bay (9-7) received additional support in their quest for a playoff berth. Their impressive fifth win in the last six games, along with Atlanta’s loss in overtime to Washington on Sunday night, propelled the Buccaneers into sole possession of first place in the NFC South division. A victory against the New Orleans Saints at home next Sunday would grant the Buccaneers their fourth consecutive division title.
“We’re just trying to get to the playoffs,” head coach Todd Bowles commented, downplaying queries regarding their winning record this season. He expressed hope for future outcomes: “If we can win next week and get a little help, that will mean a lot to me.”
In an exceptional display, Mayfield completed 27 of 32 attempts, throwing five touchdowns without any interceptions. Tampa Bay, the only NFC team to reach the playoffs for four straight years, showcased an effective offense. Coach Bowles praised Mayfield’s performance, emphasizing his ability to manage the game and distribute the ball effectively, allowing multiple players to contribute to the scoreline.
On the field, Mayfield connected with Mike Evans for touchdown passes of 2 and 1 yards. The Buccaneers scored in five consecutive first-half drives, setting a robust 27-7 lead. Additional scoring came from Jalen McMillan, who had 10 and 16-yard touchdown receptions, while linebacker J.J. Russell returned a blocked punt for a score in the third quarter. Rookie Bucky Irving proved pivotal, amassing 120 rushing yards on 20 carries and contributing four receptions for an additional 77 yards.
Mayfield highlighted Irving’s role: “Any time you give him that many opportunities, good things are going to happen.” Despite being primarily a backup to Rachaad White, Irving eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards this season, reflecting his impact on the game against Carolina.
Mayfield’s history against Carolina improved with this win, marking his fourth consecutive victory against his former team. He demonstrated impressive efficiency, lifting the Buccaneers significantly in the game.
On the opposing side, the Panthers were hampered by the absence of leading rusher Chuba Hubbard due to injury, leaving quarterback Bryce Young to carry the offense largely on his shoulders. Young managed to complete two touchdown passes to Adam Thielen but struggled with his overall performance, finishing with 203 passing yards on 15 of 28 attempts. The Buccaneers defense was aggressive, sacking Young five times and restricting Carolina to just 39 yards rushing. Thielen was a bright spot for the Panthers, making five receptions for 110 yards.
“We got outplayed. They were on fire today. They made it hard for us,” acknowledged Panthers coach Dave Canales, who stressed the need for his team to regroup for their final chance of the season.
As the regular season approaches its conclusion, Evans had a noteworthy performance with eight receptions for 97 yards. He requires just 85 yards in the upcoming game to tie a significant NFL record held by Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for 11 consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards.
Injury updates for the Buccaneers indicated that safety Antoine Winfield Jr., tight end Cade Otton, and wide receiver Sterling Shepard were inactive due to various issues. Additionally, cornerback Jamel Dean departed the first half with a knee injury and did not return.
Looking ahead, the Panthers aim to finish the season against Atlanta next Sunday, while the Buccaneers seek to complete a season sweep against the New Orleans Saints at home.
