Monaco has publicly denounced the racist remarks directed at its player Wilfried Singo following an incident during a Ligue 1 match against Paris Saint-Germain, where Singo inadvertently caused injuries to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
During the game, which ended with PSG winning 4-2, Singo’s studs caught Donnarumma in the face as he attempted to clear the ball. This resulted in a noticeable injury, with a cut seen below Donnarumma’s right eye. Despite being cautioned earlier in the match, Singo avoided receiving a red card for the incident.
PSG later reported that Donnarumma had experienced “facial trauma with multiple wounds,” and subsequent medical assessments were planned to evaluate the extent of his injuries. He is expected to take a break from playing as he recuperates.
In response to the incident, Singo expressed his regret to Donnarumma, indicating that his action was unintentional. Through a social media post in both French and Italian, he conveyed his feelings, stating, “I wish you a good recovery,” acknowledging the significant nature of Donnarumma’s injury.
Post-match interactions revealed a different atmosphere, as PSG shared a video where Singo was seen speaking to a smiling Donnarumma in the dressing room. During this exchange, Donnarumma reassured Singo, saying “Tranquillo,” which conveys a sense of relaxation and reassurance.
However, the social media response leaned towards criticism, with many users not extending the same understanding shown by the players. Monaco issued a strong statement on Thursday denouncing the “unacceptable racist comments” aimed at Singo after the match. The club emphasized that such actions are incompatible with sportsmanship and the values that they hold dear, extending their full support to Singo during this time.
During the match’s conclusion, Donnarumma had to leave the field and was substituted by Matvey Safonov. With this victory, PSG now holds a commanding ten-point lead at the top of the French league, while Monaco sits in third place, tied on points with Marseille, who has a game in hand.
