TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University has found a new quarterback for the upcoming season, hoping that this college veteran will fare better than their last option.
Former Boston College star, Thomas Castellanos, officially joined the Seminoles on Friday.
Standing at 5-foot-9 and hailing from Georgia, Castellanos has significant experience, having started 20 games with the Eagles over the last two seasons. During that time, he amassed an impressive 3,614 passing yards along with 33 touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 1,307 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns.
However, his tenure at Boston College was not without its challenges. He faced injuries and was sidelined during a game in early November, leading to his decision to enter the transfer portal a few days later, ultimately missing the Eagles’ final three regular-season games. Without him, the team secured a 2-1 record.
Castellanos steps in to fill the void left by DJ Uiagalelei, another quarterback who also transferred twice. Uiagalelei’s stint at Florida State was short-lived as he participated in just five games in 2024 before an injury sidelined him for most of the season. The Seminoles, who had a disappointing record of 2-10, also utilized Brock Glenn and freshman Luke Kromenhoek, the latter of whom is reportedly considering transferring as well. None of these quarterbacks were able to make a significant impact, as Florida State finished a lowly 132nd in total offense among 134 teams.
Coach Mike Norvell expressed his enthusiasm about Castellanos, stating, “Thomas Castellanos is one of the most dynamic playmakers in college football. He will be a great addition with his ability on the field, and he will be a tremendous complement to our roster as we bring this program back to the Florida State standard.”
Prior to his time at Boston College, Castellanos began his college career at UCF under current FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, a connection that likely played a role in his move to Tallahassee.
