Money record: Mets sign Juan Soto to historic $765 million contract

Superstar outfielder Juan Soto has signed a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, making it the largest contract in professional sports history.

The deal includes an opt-out clause after five years, with the potential to increase the total value to over $800 million if Soto remains with the team. It also features a $75 million signing bonus and no deferred money, a rarity in deals of this magnitude.

Mets Solidify Contender Status

Soto, 26, joins a Mets team that made a surprise run to the National League Championship Series last season. His arrival cements their status as perennial contenders, with the Mets aiming to secure their first World Series title since 1986.

The Mets edged out several other teams, including the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox, to land Soto. The Yankees reportedly offered a 16-year, $760 million deal, but Soto ultimately chose the Mets, drawn by their ambitious vision and strong financial commitment.

Soto’s career numbers—.285 batting average, .421 on-base percentage, 201 home runs, and 769 walks—place him among the game’s elite. His exceptional plate discipline and power have drawn comparisons to Barry Bonds, and his postseason heroics include leading the Washington Nationals to a 2019 World Series title at just 21 years old.

In 2023, Soto posted an 8-WAR season with the Yankees, hitting 41 home runs and helping guide the team to the World Series. His postseason performance further boosted his stock, making him the most sought-after free agent in recent memory.

Record-Breaking Deal

Soto’s contract eclipses the previous high set by Shohei Ohtani, who signed a $700 million deal with the Dodgers last offseason. Unlike Ohtani’s deal, which includes significant deferred payments, Soto’s contract is fully guaranteed with no deferrals, increasing its present-day value.

This agreement vindicates Soto’s decision in 2022 to decline a 15-year, $440 million extension from the Nationals. Over his career, Soto has earned a total of $819 million, solidifying his place as one of the wealthiest athletes in history.

What’s Next for the Mets

With Soto under contract through 2039 (barring an opt-out), the Mets now boast one of the most potent lineups in baseball. Paired with a solid core of players and a rejuvenated pitching staff, the team is poised to challenge for championships for years to come.

For Mets fans, the signing of Juan Soto marks a new era of hope and ambition, as the franchise solidifies its commitment to building a dynasty in Queens.
