Gwath achieves personal bests with 25 points and 10 rebounds as No. 24 San Diego State triumphs over Fresno State 84-62

FRESNO, Calif. — In their Mountain West Conference opener on Wednesday night, Magoon Gwath showcased an impressive performance with career-high statistics, scoring 25 points while securing 10 rebounds. His efforts aided No. 24 San Diego State in clinching an 84-62 victory over Fresno State.

The victory marked the Aztecs’ 11th consecutive win against the Bulldogs, who have struggled against them lately, including a streak of seven victories in Fresno. Gwath, a freshman forward standing at 7 feet tall, was efficient with his shooting, knocking down 10 out of 13 attempts from the field. He also contributed to the team’s three-point tally by making three of the seven shots from beyond the arc and blocking two shots. Other notable performances included BJ Davis, who added 13 points, and Wayne McKinney III, who contributed 12.

For Fresno State, Mykell Robinson led the scoring with 20 points alongside 10 rebounds. However, the team struggled offensively, shooting only 27% (18 of 66) from the floor.

Looking at the overall performance, San Diego State came into the game with a record of 2-1 against ranked teams and have now won three out of their last four matches. They are slated to host two nonconference games against San Diego and Cal Baptist, followed by a trip to San Jose to face California on December 21.

On the other hand, Fresno State faced challenges, recording their lowest scoring output since suffering a 74-56 loss to Cal State Bakersfield on November 16. With three consecutive losses now, the Bulldogs are set to play their next two games on the road against Santa Clara and BYU.

A significant moment in the game occurred when Alex Crawford scored the final five points of the first half, narrowing Fresno State’s deficit to five at 29-24. Elijah Price opened the second half with a layup, closing the gap further to 29-26. However, San Diego State quickly responded with a dominant 13-3 run, establishing a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.

In terms of shooting statistics, San Diego State managed to shoot 37% (11 of 30) from the floor in the first half but improved significantly to 58% (22 of 38) in the second half. Conversely, Fresno State struggled right out of the gate after the break, missing 10 of their first 13 field-goal attempts.

Both teams are set to return to action on Saturday, with San Diego State hosting San Diego while Fresno State heads to Santa Clara for their next matchup.
