KINGSTON, Jamaica — On Saturday, Captain Kraigg Brathwaite made history by setting the record for the most consecutive Test matches played by a West Indian, surpassing the legendary Garfield Sobers. Brathwaite achieved this milestone during the second Test match against Bangladesh at Sabina Park, which experienced a delay of five hours due to a soggy outfield.

Garfield Sobers, who was also a captain, previously held the record with 85 consecutive Tests among his total of 93 before retiring in 1974, leaving behind a legacy as one of cricket’s all-time greats. Brathwaite, who made his international debut in 2011, has shown remarkable consistency by participating in every Test match since 2014.

Expressing his emotions ahead of his 96th Test, Brathwaite shared, “It means a lot. I’m extremely grateful because we live in a generation where T10 and T20 formats dominate, but Test cricket represents the ultimate challenge. When I look back, I want to feel that I have made a significant contribution to West Indies cricket.”

The all-time record for consecutive Tests remains with England’s Alastair Cook, who played 159 Tests in succession from 2006 to 2018. The West Indies team maintained the same lineup that triumphed over Bangladesh in the first Test held in Antigua with a notable margin of 201 runs.

Bangladesh, after winning the toss, opted to bat first and introduced opener Shadman Islam along with fast bowler Nahid Rana into their squad for this match.
