SYDNEY — Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been sidelined from the upcoming second cricket test against India due to a strain in his side.
The 33-year-old, who recorded match figures of 5-57 across 34 overs during Australia’s significant 295-run loss in the first test in Perth, has struggled with similar injuries in the past. This ongoing issue has limited him to just four test appearances over the last two years.
Scott Boland, who served as the 12th man in the first test, is the frontrunner to step in for Hazlewood in the day-night match set to take place in Adelaide beginning on Friday.
In a precautionary move, uncapped bowlers Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett have also been added to the squad as backup, as announced by Cricket Australia on Saturday.
Although Hazlewood’s current injury is not anticipated to keep him out for the entirety of the five-match series, it adds an additional layer of concern for the Australian team, which is also keeping a close eye on the condition of allrounder Mitch Marsh, who is dealing with an ankle issue.
Beau Webster has been included in the squad as a precautionary measure for Marsh, who may require additional support as the series progresses.
