The national player of the week in men’s college basketball for Week 3 has been announced, highlighting Kam Jones from Marquette.
Jones made history by becoming the first player from Marquette to achieve a triple-double since Dwyane Wade, who accomplished the feat during an Elite Eight game in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. In a recent matchup against then-No. 6 Purdue, Jones logged impressive stats of 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, aiding the Golden Eagles in ending Purdue’s remarkable 39-game regular-season non-conference winning streak. Additionally, Jones contributed 10 points in a victory over Georgia, which has pushed Marquette up to the No. 10 spot in the AP Top 25. This marks Marquette’s first 6-0 start since the 2011-12 season.
Reflecting on his experience, Jones, a senior from Memphis, Tennessee, stated, “It’s what you come to Marquette for. It’s a huge testament to my teammates just trusting me. I appreciate them trusting me to be one of the main leaders of this team.”
In the runner-up position, Maxime Raynaud from Stanford exhibited remarkable performance as a 7-foot-1 center, scoring 32 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, along with hitting a couple of 3-pointers, to lead the Cardinal past Santa Clara on Saturday. Raynaud also achieved a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in a previous game against Norfolk State. The senior from Paris has maintained a double-double in all his games so far, helping Stanford secure a 6-0 start for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
Honorable mentions include Cooper Flagg from Duke, Norchad Omier from Baylor, and Labaron Philon from Alabama.
For those looking ahead, Jaland Lowe from Pittsburgh is a player to watch. The sophomore guard recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a matchup against VMI last Monday, later adding 22 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in a win over LSU. He concluded an eventful week with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a close 81-75 defeat to No. 15 Wisconsin.
