CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — In a thrilling showdown on Saturday, Sergio Morancy made a significant impact by not only returning a punt for a touchdown but also catching three touchdown passes, helping Northern Iowa secure a 41-34 victory over Indiana State. Tye Edwards dominated on the ground with an impressive 229 rushing yards, marking a remarkable performance in head coach Mark Farley’s final game at the helm of the Panthers.

Farley, who is 61 years old, had previously announced that this season would be his last, bringing an end to a remarkable 24-year coaching career. He retires as the most successful football coach in the history of both Northern Iowa and the Missouri Valley Conference, with a total of 183 career wins. During his tenure, he led the Panthers to seven conference championships, received two Coach of the Year accolades, and was honored as the 2007 FCS National Coach of the Year.

Morancy electrified the crowd early by returning a punt 63 yards for Northern Iowa’s opening touchdown. He followed that up with a 24-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dunne, and then a spectacular 69-yard touchdown catch that ultimately gave the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish at 24-14.

The second half opened with Edwards breaking loose for a 75-yard touchdown run. Caden Palmer, who had already kicked a 39-yard field goal in the first quarter, added a 19-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to increase the Panthers’ lead to 34-17. Indiana State made a valiant effort to come back, scoring a field goal to start the fourth quarter. Elijah Owens connected with Kevin Barnett for a 73-yard touchdown pass, and Shen Butler-Lawson added a spectacular 68-yard rushing touchdown with 14:06 remaining in the game, bringing the score closer.

However, Morancy’s 13-yard touchdown reception with 7:44 left on the clock extended the Panthers’ lead back to 41-31, securing the win. Dunne completed 13 of 15 passes for 204 yards, while Morancy finished the game with five receptions totaling 119 yards for Northern Iowa, which ended its season with a 3-9 record and a 1-7 mark in the MVC.

For Indiana State, Owens played a key role, completing 14 of 20 passes for 168 yards while also carrying the ball 20 times for 107 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Butler-Lawson contributed significantly to the ground game with 124 rushing yards on 17 carries.
