OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Following a strong defensive performance recently, the Baltimore Ravens are now facing a new challenge.
All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith missed practice again on Friday due to a hamstring issue. The Ravens have not officially ruled him or any other players out for their upcoming game, which is scheduled for Monday night, but Smith’s participation appears uncertain.
“It would definitely pose a challenge if Roquan isn’t available,” said defensive coordinator Zach Orr. “We’re hoping for the best and will see how it progresses. It’s not going to be possible for just one individual to fill his shoes; Roquan is an every-down linebacker.”
Despite narrowly losing 18-16 in their last game, the Ravens may take solace in the fact that their defense did not concede any touchdowns, a promising sign for a unit that currently ranks 26th in the league for total defense.
The Ravens will head to Los Angeles this Monday to face the Chargers. Fortunately for them, they seem to have avoided a major setback with star safety Kyle Hamilton, who suffered an ankle injury in a game against Cincinnati earlier this month but managed to play nearly every snap defensively in their game against Pittsburgh the following week.
On the other hand, Smith could not take part in practice on Thursday or Friday due to his hamstring injury. If he is unable to play, linebacker Malik Harrison, who had a career-high in tackles last weekend, is expected to step up significantly.
“We remind our players that they’re just one play away from being on the field, so they must stay prepared. Malik was ready when called upon,” Orr noted. “He did a solid job, especially after settling down following the first series. That’s the kind of performance we anticipate from him.”
It remains to be seen if last week’s performance can be a springboard for the Ravens’ defense moving forward. Earlier in the season, the team showcased a strong defense by allowing just 10 points in a win over Buffalo in Week 4, but then faltered against Cincinnati, allowing 38 points in their next game. Even after limiting a good Denver squad to 10 points, they struggled when they faced Cincinnati again soon after.
“This is easier said than done. After performing well against Buffalo, we faced setbacks in the subsequent weeks, which is something that weighs on us,” acknowledged Hamilton. “Recognizing that we played well is crucial, but we’re aware we have to improve. That’s the current mindset of the entire defense.”
Hamilton’s versatility is one differentiating factor that adds value to the team. Positioning him deeper in coverage could help the Ravens guard against significant passing threats. In their latest outing, Pittsburgh’s Russell Wilson managed only 205 yards against Baltimore, an impressive feat compared to the 428 yards and four touchdowns allowed to Joe Burrow in the previous game played by Baltimore.
“I’ve always considered myself a safety—a versatile one, but primarily a safety. If I’m needed to play that role, it’s not a problem for me,” Hamilton asserted.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that aside from Smith, several players missed practice on Friday, including wide receiver Rashod Bateman (knee), defensive tackle Travis Jones (ankle), safety Sanoussi Kane (ankle), center Tyler Linderbaum (back), and cornerback Arthur Maulet (calf). However, wide receiver Nelson Agholor returned to full participation after being sidelined due to illness.
