DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — The rescue operations following the collapse of a building in Tanzania’s bustling commercial hub are currently in their third consecutive day as officials commit to continuing efforts until all individuals trapped are located and retrieved. The tragic incident, which took place on Saturday morning, has resulted in the loss of at least 13 lives, and the exact number of people still missing remains uncertain. Several family members have reported losing contact with their loved ones who may have been inside the structure at the time of the collapse.
Authorities have successfully rescued over 80 individuals from the four-story building, which housed a variety of shops. In a response to the situation, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu announced on Sunday that over 20 survivors are currently receiving medical care, with the government promising to cover all expenses related to their treatment.
In light of the disaster, the President has mandated a comprehensive examination of all buildings in the Kariakoo district of Dar es Salaam, a well-known area among local traders. She has also instructed law enforcement to secure ownership and construction permits pertinent to the collapsed building, underscoring the necessity for regulatory compliance in the region.
As recovery efforts continue, the funerals for some of the deceased commenced on Monday. The country is currently experiencing its rainy season, a time notorious for an increase in building collapses in this part of East Africa. Many of these incidents are attributed to breaches of construction standards and guidelines, highlighting a pressing need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations moving forward.
