CARACAS, Venezuela — On Saturday, various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Venezuela reported the liberation of a number of individuals who were incarcerated during the tragic anti-government protests that erupted following the controversial presidential election in July, the results of which remain hotly debated.

This release coincided with an announcement from the Attorney General, a figure aligned with the ruling party, regarding the review of 225 cases associated with the events that transpired after the election. Both President Nicolás Maduro and opposition contender Edmundo González assert that they emerged victorious from the electoral process.

The Venezuelan organizations, Penal Forum and Venezuelan Prison Observatory, disclosed the details of the releases on social media platform X. However, the precise number of released individuals has not yet been clarified. According to Venezuelan Prison Observatory, these releases came with certain unspecified conditions.

Images circulated online by the Observatory captured emotional moments of women embracing their family members outside a Venezuelan prison. The organization has referred to these releases as a “victory” and has called for the release of all remaining prisoners associated with the election and its aftermath.

Maduro’s administration faces significant backlash due to allegations of electoral impropriety and the subsequent crackdown that included the detention of political leaders, lawyers, electoral workers, volunteers, and protesters, affecting both adults and minors.

The protests were incited after Venezuela’s electoral body announced Maduro’s victory in the July 28 elections, claiming they were unable to publish detailed precinct-level results because their website had been compromised. In stark contrast, the principal opposition coalition reported that they had obtained voting tallies from over 80% of the electronic voting machines nationwide, asserting that González had won by a considerable margin and made this information public online.

The total number of arrests made by the government stood at around 2,400 individuals. Government representatives, including Attorney General Tarek William Saab, have vocally defended these detentions. However, just earlier this week, Maduro urged Saab and judicial authorities to ensure “justice” in the event any cases warranted correction or further examination.
