MUNICH — In a heartfelt announcement made on Saturday, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Mala Grohs disclosed her recent diagnosis of a malignant tumor. The news comes as a sign of the club’s unwavering support, as they opted to extend her contract for an additional year.

At just 23 years old, Grohs has been an instrumental part of the team, participating in every match during this season’s Women’s Champions League, including a recent impressive 3-0 victory over Valerenga on Tuesday. However, she will be taking an indefinite leave from her duties to fully focus on her recovery, as communicated by the club.

In a video message, Grohs expressed her optimism regarding the upcoming treatment. “I’m in the very best hands with the doctors here,” she stated, highlighting the immense support she has been receiving from her teammates and everyone involved with Bayern.

“This situation is indeed a challenge that I hadn’t anticipated facing at this point in my life, but I am confident that, with their support, I can overcome it. I plan to stay connected with the team as much as possible to draw strength from the energy the girls radiate and remain a part of the group’s journey. I genuinely hope to see everyone again very soon,” Grohs added.

Having joined Bayern Munich in 2019, Grohs has celebrated considerable success at the club, securing three German championship titles during her tenure. Although she earned a call-up to the German national team last month, her participation was thwarted by a required tonsil surgery, leaving her still awaiting her senior international debut.
