SAO PAULO — An explosion occurred outside Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasilia on Wednesday, according to local police reports. News footage revealed a body lying on the ground at the scene.
Authorities indicated that a device detonated near the court premises; however, further specifics regarding the incident were not shared.
Jorge Macedo, an employee at the Supreme Court, reported hearing two explosions, which prompted the evacuation of the building. According to him, the individual found on the pavement appeared to have died.
Firefighters later confirmed that there was one fatality, although the identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
José Chrispiniano, a representative for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, clarified that the 79-year-old president was not present in the nearby presidential palace at the time of the explosion.
