A court in Argentina confirmed on Wednesday a six-year prison sentence along with a permanent disqualification from holding public office for former President Cristina Fernández, a prominent figure in the political landscape of the country in recent times.
Fernández was found guilty in 2022 by a panel of three judges for her involvement in a fraudulent scheme that misappropriated millions through various public works initiatives during her time in office. She attempted to challenge the ruling, but the higher court upheld the initial verdict.
Throughout the proceedings, Fernández has maintained her innocence regarding the charges against her.
As a member of the Peronist political movement, she has the option to take her case to the Supreme Court, which allows her to remain free while awaiting the judicial decision.
Regarded as one of Argentina’s most influential leaders of the 21st century, Fernández faced allegations of improperly awarding public contracts to a construction magnate who is reportedly connected to her family.
