ST. PAUL, Minn. — Authorities reported that a man shot and killed by police in Minnesota was the subject of a search in connection with the murder of his pregnant wife.

The deceased man, identified as Mychel Allan Stowers, 36, was shot by officers on Saturday in St. Paul. Following the incident, the two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation is conducted.

Stowers was wanted for the fatal shooting of Damara Alexis Kirkland, 35, who was approximately two months pregnant at the time of her death on October 19. Evidence from the scene included ultrasound images found in the apartment as well as a letter addressed to Stowers in the mailbox, as detailed in a probable cause statement.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, investigators had received a tip indicating that Stowers was at a business in St. Paul that Saturday. Upon spotting him, Stowers attempted to escape by riding away on a bicycle just before several police vehicles arrived to apprehend him.

During the encounter, Stowers reportedly brandished a handgun and aimed it at the officers. A preliminary investigation claims that the two responding officers then discharged their weapons, resulting in Stowers’ death. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in this incident.

Stowers had recently been paroled in March after serving time for a second-degree murder conviction related to a shooting in 2008 that resulted in the death of another man in St. Paul. At the time of the shooting, he was participating in a work-release program and residing in a halfway house, although he had received permission to visit a woman, referred to as his ex-wife, on the day of the shooting.

Records show that Stowers had initiated divorce proceedings in June, but it appears the divorce had not yet been finalized.
