ROME — Tourists visiting the iconic Trevi Fountain in Rome are no longer permitted to toss coins over their shoulders, a practice that traditionally symbolizes the hope of returning to the city. This change comes amidst ongoing maintenance work on the historic monument, though an elevated walkway has been introduced to provide limited access to the site.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri unveiled the new steel walkway, emphasizing that it offers a closer perspective of the fountain, resulting in a “unique experience” without the disruptions typically caused by crowds. The walkway spans the fountain’s basin and can hold approximately 130 visitors simultaneously.

However, tossing coins from this vantage point has been prohibited, as the fountain’s waters are currently drained. Those who attempt to do so could face a fine of 50 euros, according to the mayor’s announcement. Local tradition holds that throwing a coin into the Baroque fountain assures the thrower will return to Rome, making this new restriction particularly disappointing for some visitors.

In place of tossing coins into the fountain, a small collection pool has been set up beside the walkway. This pool is designated for coin collections, which are then donated to Caritas, a charity that aids in providing meals for individuals in need.

The elevated walkway will be in operation until maintenance concludes, which is anticipated to occur by the end of the year. In addition, city officials are formulating a scheme to regulate access to the area surrounding the fountain. Once implemented, visitors will need to make reservations online and pay a fee of 2 euros (approximately $2.20). During their visit, guests will be allotted a half-hour to appreciate the beauty of the fountain.
