WASHINGTON — In a historic move, President Joe Biden is set to become the first sitting U.S. president to explore the Amazon rainforest later this month. His journey to Brazil is part of a six-day Latin America trip designed for two significant international summits, as confirmed by the White House on Thursday.

Biden’s travels will kick off with a visit to Lima, Peru, from November 14 to 16, where he will engage with President Dina Boluarte and participate in the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. After Peru, he will head to Brazil, visiting both Manaus and Rio de Janeiro between November 17 and 19.

While in Manaus, Biden will tour the rainforest and engage with local leaders, including indigenous groups that are committed to preserving this crucial environment. This represents a notable first for a sitting U.S. president. In Rio de Janeiro, he is slated to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, focusing on topics such as workers’ rights and sustainable economic development. Additionally, Biden will take part in the Group of 20 summit, where he will address pressing global issues including food insecurity, poverty, and climate change.

Earlier on Thursday, Biden and Lula had a conversation regarding the approaching G20 summit, which also provided an opportunity for Biden to connect with a leader aligned with his political values. Lula, who leans left politically, has expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Democrat Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. election. In 2022, Lula won the presidency, unseating Jair Bolsonaro, a figure often referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics.”

As Biden approaches the end of his term in office and prepares to pass the presidency to Republican Donald Trump, these summits represent one of his final opportunities to engage with global leaders he has collaborated with throughout his administration.
