On Tuesday, Democratic Representative Adam Schiff secured a U.S. Senate position representing California after a relatively subdued campaign against former baseball player and Republican candidate Steve Garvey.
The election for the open seat, previously held by the late Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, did not generate much excitement, reflecting the state’s strong Democratic leanings. In fact, California Republicans have not triumphed in a Senate election for more than thirty years.
Schiff, who began his political career with a U.S. House seat in Los Angeles in 2000, gained national recognition during his role as lead prosecutor in the first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. The announcement of Schiff’s victory was made shortly after 11:30 p.m. EST by various media outlets.
