Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has secured reelection for a U.S. House seat representing Minnesota in the recent election.
Omar will embark on her third term in office, continuing to serve the predominantly Democratic 5th District, which encompasses Minneapolis and its nearby suburbs.
She is well-recognized as part of the progressive bloc in Congress known as the “Squad,” and has been a vocal opponent of Israel’s actions during the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Her initial campaign in 2018 marked her entry into history, as she became one of the first two Muslim women to be elected to Congress.
During this recent election, her Republican opponent was Dalia Al-Aqidi, an Iraqi American journalist who identifies as a secular Muslim and has criticized Omar as being supportive of Hamas.
The election results were officially called in Omar’s favor at 11:32 p.m. EST by the media.
