Republican Representative Steve Scalise secured his reelection to a U.S. House seat in Louisiana on Tuesday. Serving as the House Majority Leader, Scalise has been a member of Congress since his initial election in 2008. Throughout his tenure, he has held the positions of majority or minority whip based on which party was in power within the House. At 58, Scalise represents a strongly Republican district, which covers the southeastern part of Louisiana.

In a personal announcement last year, Scalise revealed that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment. By February, he indicated that he had achieved “complete remission.” The results of the election were confirmed with Scalise being declared the victor at 11:16 p.m. EST.

Scalise’s continued presence in Congress signifies the longstanding support he has maintained within his district, despite the challenges he faced with his health. His leadership role and experience in legislative matters were crucial in his campaign as he seeks to further his work in the House. With his ongoing recovery, Scalise aims to focus on his legislative duties while advocating for policies that resonate with his constituents. The election results affirm his solid standing within the party and showcase the loyalty of voters in his district.
