Republican Jefferson Shreve secured a victory in the election for a U.S. House seat in Indiana on Tuesday.
Shreve, who previously served on the Indianapolis City Council and faced defeat in last year’s mayoral race, triumphed over Democratic opponent Cynthia Wirth, a teacher.
Wirth had previously attempted to win the same seat in 2022, contending against then-incumbent Republican Rep. Greg Pence, who is the elder sibling of former Vice President Mike Pence.
After deciding not to run for a fourth term, Greg Pence left the field open for the election.
Throughout his campaign, Shreve emphasized the importance of completing the U.S.-Mexican border wall to help control illegal immigration and argued that rampant federal spending is a key factor contributing to rising inflation.
The announcement of Shreve’s victory was made at 8:37 p.m. EST, marking a significant moment in Indiana’s political landscape.
