Republican Representative John Rutherford successfully secured reelection for a seat in the U.S. House, representing Florida’s 5th District on Tuesday.
This district largely encompasses Jacksonville along with its western and southern suburbs, notably including the historic city of St. Augustine.
Rutherford first entered Congress in 2016, stepping into the role after his predecessor, a fellow Republican, chose not to seek reelection.
Before his political career, he dedicated over 40 years to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, where he notably served three terms as the elected sheriff.
In this election, Rutherford faced Democrat Jay McGovern, and the election results were reported with Rutherford being declared the victor at 7:18 p.m. EST.
