Wisconsin’s Key Congressional Races

In Wisconsin, a Republican in their first term, who was present at the Capitol during the chaotic events of January 6, 2021, is seeking re-election. Meanwhile, another Republican candidate, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is aiming to maintain a Republican hold on an open congressional district.

Additionally, a former member of Congress and state legislator from the Democratic party is also contesting to unseat a Republican incumbent in the southeastern part of the state.

Here are the three key congressional races garnering significant attention in Wisconsin:

Democrats Target Western Wisconsin’s 3rd District

The 3rd Congressional District in western Wisconsin, previously held by a Democrat for 26 years until it shifted to Republican control in 2022 with Derrick Van Orden’s victory, is regarded as the most competitive congressional district in the state. Van Orden, a former Navy SEAL and a staunch ally of Trump, was present during the January 6 insurrection and is now a primary target for Democratic challengers.

Rebecca Cooke, a small-business owner and political activist, won the Democratic primary against two other candidates and is set to challenge Van Orden. She has significantly outperformed her peers in fundraising, which is fueling Democratic hopes for this upcoming race.

This district, characterized by its scenic Driftless Area and geographical proximity to the Mississippi River and Minnesota, stretches from Illinois all the way 250 miles north to places like Prairie du Chien, known for its outdoor gear hub and historical sites.

Trump-Backed Candidate Aims for Open Seat

On a different front, Tony Wied, a former owner of a gas station chain, has won Trump’s endorsement and is aiming to secure his first elected position following a successful Republican primary. He faces off against Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an obstetrician advocating for abortion rights who has actively challenged the Wisconsin abortion law.

Lyerly has focused her campaign on abortion rights issues, highlighting the significance of this topic within the heavily Republican district comprising urban centers like Green Bay and rural landscapes. The seat became open following the unexpected resignation of Republican Mike Gallagher, who occasionally critiqued Trump.

Former Legislator Seeks Democratic Comeback

Peter Barca, a former congressman and longtime member of the state Legislature, is attempting to reclaim the seat he once occupied three decades ago. He is challenging Republican Representative Bryan Steil, who is gunning for his fourth term in southeast Wisconsin. Steil took over the position previously held by former House Speaker Paul Ryan.

While the district is known for leaning conservative, recent redistricting has made it more competitive for Democrats. Barca previously represented this area in Congress for a short span before stepping down in 1995. Since then, he has served in the state Assembly for over 18 years and held a position as state revenue secretary prior to this current congressional bid.

This district borders Illinois to the south and encompasses cities such as Kenosha, Racine, and Janesville, setting the stage for a riveting electoral battle.
