Back in January 2023, Kim Kardashian acquired Princess Diana’s iconic amethyst and diamond Attallah cross necklace at a Sotheby’s auction for nearly $200,000. Since then, fashion watchers have kept an eye out for the Kardashians star’s debut wearing the statement piece.
Last week, a photo surfaced of Kim trying on the necklace during a fitting. Maison Margiela’s Image Director Alexis Roche posted a photo of her wearing the cross with a dramatic dress in a matching shade. While Kim opted not to debut the necklace in this ensemble, she finally wore it on Saturday night at the 2024 LACMA Art and Film Gala in LA.
Such a statement-making piece calls for a dramatic look, and Kim rose to the occasion with the purple cross paired with a white Gucci gown. Her gown featured a plunging neckline reaching her navel, providing ample room for the necklace to take center stage. Kim complemented her look with an oversized men’s coat and a Bvlgari pearl choker for additional glam. Stylist Chris Appleton finished the look, sweeping her dark hair into a deep side part, with added extensions for volume.
The Attallah cross necklace
Though the necklace caught Kim’s eye due to her admiration for Princess Diana, it was never owned by the royal family. Instead, it was on loan to Diana from her friend Naim Attallah, who bought the piece in the 1980s. According to Attallah’s son Naim, Diana was the only person to ever wear the necklace until Kim acquired it.
“When I was growing up, we’d always have it on the table for Christmas lunch, but it was never worn by anyone other than Diana and it hasn’t been seen in public since she died,” Attallah shared, prior to Kim’s unveiling.
Collecting items with historical ties
Kim Kardashian is known for collecting pieces that connect her to her idols. She owns jade and diamond bracelets from Elizabeth Taylor, another muse, which she acquired at auction in 2011. In 2022, she paid homage to Marilyn Monroe by wearing the actress’s dress to the Met Gala.
